Jawad’s Story

Jawad is a male survivor of childhood sexual abuse. He wrote this piece to speak to other male survivors of abuse, knowing how difficult it can be to come forward. He wanted to encourage them to speak out and start their own healing journey.

Jawad was abused as a child for many years by family members. For many years, he kept what happened inside himself and told nobody. He felt ashamed and guilty, as if it was his fault. Being around his family was painful, as he felt that they had not noticed or protected him from his abuser. As an adult, he had flashbacks, depression and anxiety.

Jawad was supported by one of our ISVAs (Independent Sexual Violence Advisers). He had specialist counselling to help him with his trauma. He also joined our survivor’s support group, where he was able to meet other male survivors of abuse who made him feel less alone.

Jawad’s message to other male survivors of childhood sexual abuse:

Without Women’s Aid I honestly don’t know where I would be today. I have never been in a place where I have felt more accepted and understood. The people here are a real credit to humanity and remind us what the word charity really means.

Put your prejudices and preconceptions aside and give Black Country Women’s Aid a chance.

The worst is behind us, it has already happened. What have we left to lose?

Give them a chance today and change your life for the better. I promise you won’t look back.

We have changed Jawad’s name to protect his identity.
