Black Country Women’s Aid is proud to announce Karen Dowman as 2026 Inspirational Woman of the Year.

Sara Ward, CEO of Black Country Women’s Aid, said:

This award recognises local women who embody courage, kindness and a commitment to lifting others – and Karen truly stood out for the remarkable impact she has made in her community.

The Inspirational Woman of the Year Award celebrates the generosity, resilience and resourcefulness shown by women who go above and beyond for others. Karen was nominated for her unwavering dedication and the meaningful difference she continues to make in the lives of those around her. Her compassion, strength and ability to create positive change reflect everything this award represents.

This year’s International Women’s Day celebration held special significance, marking 40 years of Black Country Women’s Aid supporting women and children escaping violence and abuse. Hosted at The Hawthorns, the event brought together supporters, partners and community champions to honour women’s achievements and reflect on the importance of empowerment and equality.

Speakers on the night emphasised that empowerment is not about granting women opportunities, but about recognising that those opportunities were always theirs. The evening served as a reminder that when one woman rises, she lifts others with her – a theme that resonates deeply with Karen’s story.

Previous winners were invited back to present the award

We were honoured to welcome back former Inspirational Woman winners Kerry Tidman, Jo Downing and Jen Lumsden‑Gordon, who presented this year’s award to Karen. Their continued support demonstrates the legacy this award creates: a growing community of women who champion and inspire one another.

Thank you to our sponsors

We also extend our sincere thanks to Hubtel I.T., proud sponsors of this year’s Inspirational Woman Award. Their support ensures we can continue recognising the extraordinary women who help shape our community. We were delighted to have Hubtel join us on stage to present the 2026 trophy – a moment that highlighted the strength of partnership in empowering women and supporting BCWA’s mission.

The event also raised vital funds to help women and children who are beginning their journey to a safer life. Donations collected on the night will provide essential items – from kitchen equipment to bedding and comfort items – helping families rebuild their futures with dignity and hope.

To every woman nominated, every partner who supported the event, and every guest who joined us in celebration: thank you. Your support helps us continue our mission to create safety, empowerment and opportunity across the Black Country.

And finally, congratulations, Karen. Your compassion, dedication and strength inspire everyone at BCWA. We are honoured to recognise you as our 2026 Inspirational Woman of the Year.
