Over the recent holiday period, our refuge hosted a wide variety of enriching and engaging activities for children and families. These sessions were designed to support wellbeing, encourage creativity, and strengthen family bonds through fun, therapeutic, and recreational experiences.

Creating space for healing and growth

When we plan activities in our refuge, we’re not just filling time; we’re creating moments that matter. We carefully balance fun, relaxation, and life skills to help families unwind, connect, and build confidence for the future. These sessions offer more than just entertainment; they’re a chance to explore, to laugh, and to discover what brings comfort and joy.

How activities spark confidence and connection

Take Zella (name changed for privacy), for example. When she first arrived, she was exhausted, barely able to speak or keep her eyes open. That first week, she rested and began to settle into her new surroundings. By the second week, she started attending our twice-weekly activities, quietly observing and hesitating to join in. But with gentle encouragement from staff and other residents, Zella began to engage. A month later, she’s the first to arrive, full of energy and ready to participate.

At our recent Zumba session, clients were invited to share music from their cultures and show off their dance styles. When it was Zella’s turn, she danced with joy and laughter lighting up her face. She still has moments of shyness, but with a little support, she jumps right back into the fun.

These activities might seem simple, but their impact is profound. They help clients like Zella rediscover themselves, build trust, and prepare for life beyond the Safe House. They also create a space where people from different backgrounds can connect, share, and support one another, building a sense of community that lasts long after they leave.

Here’s a look at what we got up to:

Mini mindfulness sessions

Children explored simple mindfulness techniques through creative crafts like feel-good jars, dream boards, and worry dolls. These calming activities helped promote emotional regulation, self-awareness, and stress relief in a safe and supportive space.

Blackpool seaside trip

A day trip to Blackpool gave families a refreshing change of scenery and a classic British seaside experience. From beach walks to arcades and fish and chips, the day was filled with joy and relaxation.

“We loved the trip. I couldn’t afford a holiday this year, so this was a big deal for us.”

Picnic food making and picnic

Families got hands-on in the kitchen, preparing sandwiches, fruit kebabs, and healthy snacks before enjoying a shared picnic outdoors. This activity encouraged independence, healthy eating, and social interaction.

“My daughter loved making her own lunch – she felt so grown up! The picnic was a lovely way to enjoy time together without stress.”

Seaside arts and crafts

Inspired by the seaside trip, children created sand art, shell collages, and beach-themed paintings. These sessions encouraged self-expression and helped develop fine motor skills and creativity.

Let’s get moving

This energetic session featured games, dancing, and movement-based activities to get everyone active. It promoted physical health, coordination, and teamwork in a fun and lively environment.

Waffle making

Children decorated their own waffles with a variety of toppings, sparking creativity and independence while enjoying a delicious treat with their families.

Biscuit decorating

With biscuits, cakes, and a colourful selection of icings and sprinkles, children created edible masterpieces. This fun activity supported imagination, fine motor skills, and patience.

Stay and play sessions

These informal drop-in sessions allowed families to engage in free play, supported by staff. They encouraged bonding, peer interaction, and a sense of community and routine.

Pyjama and cinema day

Families arrived in pyjamas to enjoy age-appropriate films in a cosy lounge transformed into a mini cinema. With beanbags, blankets, and fresh popcorn, the day offered comfort and connection.

“The kids loved the popcorn and the films. It felt like a great big family sitting down together to relax and enjoy time from the safety of the refuge.”

Holiday vibes day

We brought the spirit of summer holidays into the refuge with themed decorations, music, games, and snacks. It was a joyful and relaxing day for all.

Bouncy castle party

A high-energy event featuring a bouncy castle, music, games, and treats.

“The bouncy castle was a hit with the kids! They didn’t stop bouncing and laughing the whole time.”
“A real party atmosphere, the best day of the summer activities for us.”

Sports day

Families took part in friendly sporting challenges like relay races and team games. The event promoted teamwork, resilience, and healthy competition in a supportive setting.

Together, we made this summer special… Let’s keep the joy going!

These sessions brought joy, comfort, and connection to families who needed it most. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we were able to create moments of normality, laughter, and togetherness that will be remembered for a long time.
